Warning Signs

Victims of domestic violence or sexual assault may show the following signs:

• Symptoms of depression or anxiety
• Panic attacks, sleeplessness, or suicidal feelings
• Post-traumatic stress reactions
• Feelings of isolation
• Drugs and/or alcohol abuse
• Bruises, grab marks, lacerations, or fractures
• Repeat visits to the emergency room with chronic injuries or vague complaints

An abusive spouse or partner may

• Insist on staying close
• Be overly solicitous or eager to explain the victim’s injuries
